Caring too much and doing too little...

Yesterday night I stumbled upon the CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute. I am familiar with CNN Heroes, but was not aware of the tribute they do. CNN chooses the top ten heroes and then viewers vote and choose the hero of the year. At this tribute they award each of the heros and then announce the hero of the year. Many musicians and actors show their support by presenting the awards or performing. (John Krasinski, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Meg Ryan, Hugh Jackman, etc.) I had voted a month or so ago for Yohannes Gebregeorgis, an Ethiopian that after immigrating to the US and becoming a librarian choose to go back to Ethiopia to share his love of literature with the children of Ethiopia. He founded Ethiopia Reads. I have written about this organization in previous posts. Another hero featured was a nanny from Malawai who started and sponsors a school in her home country on her nanny pay and from small donations of other nannies. A man from Savannah, Ga was a nominated hero because he goes to Mexico and brings ongoing prosthetic and orthotic care to those in need. If you would like to read more about these amazing people check out http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2008/cnn.heroes/index.html.

The people nominated were just everyday people. They aren't movie stars or rock stars. They aren't millionaires or scientists. They are people that saw a need and then decided they were the person to fill that need. They are living my favorite quote "Be the change you want to see in the world." (Ghandi) They wanted to see something change, they saw an injustice and didn't think, "someone should do something about that." They thought, "I am going to do something about that." I felt very small after watching this program. I felt small because I feel like I am one step away from being one of those people. Unfortunately, it is a very big step. I see a need, I have ideas, I have passion, but I don't do something. That's what sets people like these heroes apart... they do something. After seeing this program it was enough for me to just sit and hate myself for not doing something. Instead, I felt inspired because after all I am only one step away. I need to define what it is I am supposed to do and not be afraid to do it.

I am to the point now that it is not enough for me to just talk about all the injustices that grip my heart. My words don't work. I am not eloquent enough, I can't seem to communicate what I believe in a way that inspires others. However, actions always inspire others. My goal now is to use my actions to replace my failing words. I want to "be the change I want to see in the world." I am done with just talking about the lives of people in countries like Ethiopia. I want to do something to help change their lives. I am done just talking about the ongoing atrocities facing Congo. I want to do something to help stop those atrocities. I am done just talking about how every seven seconds, somewhere in the world a child under the age of five dies of starvation, how nearly one billion people in the world live on less than $1 a day, another 2.5 billion people in the world live on less than $2 a day and how nearly one billion people in the world cannot read or sign their name. I want to change those statistics. I want to be the reason why a child lives, a family survives, and a child can go to school. Talking about all of these things is important, bringing awareness is important. But my words cannot inspire unless I first act on it. It seems to me that the CNN Heroes words mean so much more and inspire so many more because they have already done something. So as the new year approaches, this will be my focus... to do something. 2008 will be my last year of caring too much and doing too little.

Thanks for tuning in and holding me accountable. Now I have to do something because I told all of you I would. :)

Our Day at the Park

Today Danette (a coworker & friend) came over with her two kids, Lauren & Owen, and we all went to Forsyth Park. We had a great time and no one fell off the monkey bars. Here are a few pictures from the trip to the park.

After the park we came back to the house and watched the end of the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech game. Yes, I watched football, an entire quarter actually! Andy wasn't home to enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity. :) I actually enjoyed it, it was a close game, so a little too suspenseful, but a good game nonetheless. Danette was cheering for Georgia and I found myself cheering for Georgia Tech. I probably was cheering for them because they were the underdog but whatever the reason I was glad I did since they won! You see, one of the main reasons I hate watching football is because you dedicate all this time and energy into this game and then in the end your team may lose and then you are just depressed. I hate that feeling. So, the result today made the experience more enjoyable. Not that I am going out now to get a Georgia Tech jersey... well you never know, I might. :) I mean they are responsible for redeeming football for me, well at least for a day or so. I think because of this game I may actually watch the OSU bowl game. Go Bumblebees! (Okay, yellow jackets, but they really do look like bees.)

Thanksgiving 2008

We celebrated Thanksgiving this year at the Grimms. The Grimms are a part of our church planting team. It was a wonderful dinner and wonderful company. Thank you so much for sharing your Thanksgiving with us. Here are a few pictures from the day.

Here is Lisa & Chris Cree. They are a part of our church plant team also.

The cutest place cards. :)

Tek at his first Thanksgiving dinner. Always willing to take kisses from mom, can't you tell?

Tek's first time on the trampoline.
Thank you Maggie for showing Tek how to jump on the trampoline.

The day after Thanksgiving brought the new RED drinks to Starbucks. They offer 3 holiday drinks to choose from and 5 cents of that purchase will go to the RED campaign and the Global Fund. I am trying not to be cynical... 5 cents??? Really?? Maybe if it was of every purchase, but only of those 3 drinks? Well I guess its better than nothing. If Starbucks really wants to impress me they can offer more than one fair trade coffee or even better serve fair trade ONLY!

Riley gets a little jealous if I only take pictures of Tek.
Gotta love our "snaggletooth" Tek. One front tooth.
Tek's current favorite face.
Walking with Daddy.
Tek went with Daddy to pick out our Christmas Tree.
Apparently Santa was selling them.

The house is nearly decorated. Three trees and lots of garland... its beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. :) I watched 3 movies as I decorated... Holiday, Little Women, & National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Man I forgot how funny Christmas Vacation is! I did declare previously that it is one of my favorites, but I must say that it is DEFINTELY one of my ABSOLUTE favorites! (sorry.) I laughed the entire way through. :)

More to come!

My birthday wish...

My birthday is next week.

As if anyone that knows me needs a reminder. I would have announced it sooner but I had so many friends with birthdays that I had to acknowledge... so now its my turn. :)

Actually, the reason I am mentioning my birthday is inform those that normally get me gifts that I would like something a little different for a gift this year. Instead of a gift I would like a donation made in to any of the following organizations:

Ethiopia
Reads www.ethiopiareads.org

Ahope www.ahopeforchildren.org
Oxfam www.oxfamamericaunwrapped.com
World Vision www.worldvision.org

All of the organizations I have listed I have personally given too. I only give to organizations that I first check out on charity navigator. Ahope & Ethiopia Reads are not on charity navigator but I have personally visited both and found them to be very worthy organizations. You can rest assured that all four are excellent organizations that will use your dollars to the best of their ability.

However if you REALLY want to get me something... I would love any of the shoes from this site.
Toms Shoes www.tomsshoes.com
For every pair of toms shoes you buy they give a pair to a child in need. And their next "shoe drop" will be 30,000 pairs to ETHIOPIA! So I will be purchasing a lot of their shoes for gifts this year. I currently own one pair and they are SOOO comfortable. Here is the pair I have now. I wear a size 8. :) I hope you will check out this site and consider buying a pair (or a gift certificate) for your loved ones this Christmas.
Also, I realize this being Tek's first Christmas that you are going to want to spoil him... (grandparents!)... but he is only 1. So do not spend much or rather make a donation in his name to one of the many organizations that work in Ethiopia.

Happy Birthday Uncle Cody!

Today is Cody's 26th Birthday!
Happy Birthday Old Man!

I think you loved this more than you let on. :)

Meeting Tek for the first time. I do believe that your sunglasses' strap in this picture became a casualty of Tek's grip at a later time.

"Where's my drink?"

The Men in Black... watch out ladies!

I would like credit for leaving out two pictures from this tribute... two clues: 1. Amanda's manicure 2. red scarf (man I really wanted to put that one in here too!) You may thank me at any time. :)

Happy Birthday Country Boy... we realize that it won't be as awesome a birthday in Wrongsville as it would be in the basement of John's Bar getting beat at darts... but it will be a good day nonetheless. :) (Yes that was me talking smack... how'd I do?) Anyway, we hope its your best and biggest ever! (That's what she said.) Now go have whatever you like.

With Love,
Andy, Kate, Riley, & Tek

P.S. Its very sad that not everyone can hear my music. I pick out such fitting songs. :) Guess you will never know!

Our Little Champ

Tek had tubes put in his ears today. We had to be at the hospital at 5:3o a.m. The surgery only took 10 minutes, however the standard hospital waiting time (you know... the time they make you sit around and do nothing so that they can act like they are doing really important things even though your child is the only one in the department) was around 3.5 hours. Andy and I could barely keep our eyes open.

Tek handled it all like a champ. He cried a bit when he came back from the surgery but within twenty minutes he was sleeping in mama's arms. Of course, all of the nurses just hovered over Tek declaring him to be the cutest baby ever. He is used to all of the attention, he works it like movie star. I have a feeling that as soon as he learns to write his name he will be handing out autographs.

Here are a few pictures from today's event.

And since I was up at 4:30 a.m. I am now going to do this...
Good Night!

Happy Belated Birthday Auntie Amanda!!

I forgot to actually post this on Saturday, so I had to add "Belated."
Happy 25th Birthday Auntie Amanda...
we hope it was a great one!

With Love,

Andy, Kate, Tek, & Riley (Better?)

So Intense...

Why do I watch 24? An even better question is why do I like it so much? We stopped watching it for a while because it is such a commitment. But this season sparked our interest because is set in Africa and it is about Jack Bauer fighting a coup that uses children soldiers. You would think that would stop me from watching it because the topic is already something that causes so much emotion in me... add suspense to that emotion and it results in a woman unable to sit still while yelling at the tv and digging her nails into her leg. I am trying my best to hold it together. (I don't think you can consider this entertainment.) But I have to fight through, because I really want to support this show. It is bringing attention to a very real, very horrific event occurring everyday in Africa and other parts of the world.

The recruitment of children soldiers occurs every day in various countries in Africa. It is believed at this time there is nearly 100,000 children soldiers in Africa right now. Some of those children are as young as nine years old. Some are forced into service, but most are 14-19 year old boys that volunteer. There are many reasons why they volunteer, but a contributing reason is that their country is torn apart by war so there really is no other choice. There isn't a way for their families to make a living. Most of the girls that join do so to escape domestic servitude or sexual abuse. Another reason many of the youth have reported to join is to avenge the death of a loved one.

The organization Invisible Children has done a wonderful job at raising awareness about this issue. They have traveled to Uganda many times to document the war and use of children soldiers there. The travel all over the U.S. showing the documentary in churches and to various organizations. They will eventually release the final cut of their film in theatres. Invisible Children is currently in the process of beginning their school tour to educate students throughout the U.S. of this atrocity and also to raise money to build schools in Uganda that have been devastated by this war. Check out their website at www.invisiblechildren.com. Possibly even consider a donation to this organization in lieu of a Christmas gift for someone this holiday season. Or get your local school involved in their campaign.

Thanks for listening... now back to the suspense.

Side note... little man gets tubes in his ears tomorrow morning! I will update y'all on that tomorrow. (Look at me being all southern.)

Tek's First Steps

My Little Man is walking!
He took his first steps today for Andy, Penny, & I.
Of course the camera captured the moment.

After each time he walked he would just laugh and laugh.
He was so proud of himself.
And so are we. :)
